Girls und Panzer is set in Oarai, a small port town on the Ibaraki coast, and the town has welcomed its fans for more than a decade. The local railway runs a Girls und Panzer wrapped train, the seaside shrine displays a big Girls und Panzer ema, a café inside Marine Tower is themed on the show, and shops around town display character panels. From Tokyo it is a limited express to Mito and a short ride on the Kashima Rinkai Railway, so one day is enough.

Day 1

Tokyo → Mito → Oarai → Tokyo

Station and town walk in the morning, the shrine at midday, Marine Tower and the gallery in the afternoon.

  1. Early morning

Tokyo → Mito by limited express

JR Joban Line Limited Express Hitachi or Tokiwa from Tokyo or Ueno to Mito. Hitachi takes about 1 hr 10–15 min, Tokiwa about 1 hr 20–30 min; at the time of writing the Hitachi 3 left Tokyo around 7:52 (Ueno 8:00) and reached Mito around 9:18. Check seat and ticket rules on JR East's site.

  2. Morning

Mito → Oarai on the Kashima Rinkai Railway

Change to the Oarai-Kashima Line of the Kashima Rinkai Railway, a separate company from JR, and ride about 15 min to Oarai (about ¥420 for adults). The Girls und Panzer wrapped train runs on this line; the railway posts which trains it covers on its news page, a few days at a time.

  3. Morning

    Oarai Station and Umimachi Terrace

The station sells admission tickets stamped with a different Girls und Panzer character, on a monthly schedule posted by the railway. Next door, the Umimachi Terrace tourist information center (roughly 9:00–18:00) has maps and rental bicycles, and can tell you what is on in town. Ask there about the tourism association's Girls und Panzer stamp rally.

Spot guide: Oarai Station & Umimachi Terrace
  4. Late morning

    Walk the shopping streets

Shops around town display life-size Girls und Panzer character panels, and panels of the show's tanks stand around Oarai; the tourism association publishes maps of both. These are working shops and narrow residential streets: stay on the side of the road, and panels may be taken inside on closing days or in bad weather.

  5. Midday

    Bus to Oarai Isosaki Shrine

Take the town circular bus from Oarai Station to the Oarai Isosaki Jinja Shita stop (about 16 min). From October 1, 2026 the bus is called the Umimachi Line: about ¥200 per ride or ¥500 for a day pass. On weekends and holidays buses leave Oarai Station at about 8:40, 9:47, 10:47 and 11:47, on weekdays at about 9:20 and 10:55. A rental bicycle is the flexible alternative (about 3 km).

  6. Midday

Oarai Isosaki Shrine and the torii on the rocks

The large Girls und Panzer ema hangs inside the Zuishin-mon gate. Below the shrine, the Kamiiso no Torii stands on rocks in the surf. The rocks are sacred ground, so photograph from the shore. Gate hours are roughly 6:00–17:00 from September to April and 5:30–18:00 from May to August.

    Spot guide: Oarai Isosaki Shrine
  7. Early afternoon

    Lunch

Ride the bus back toward town. Kanefuku Mentai Park Oarai, a cod-roe theme park with a free factory tour and food court, is on the route (roughly 9:00–17:00 on weekdays, to 18:00 on weekends). Oarai Seaside Station also has places to eat. Aqua World Oarai's food court is closed until a renovation next spring.

  8. Afternoon

Oarai Marine Tower and Panzer Vor

The tourism association's map of the anime's town battle marks this tower. The Girls und Panzer café Panzer Vor is on floors 1–2, free to enter (roughly 10:00–18:00, check the closing day before you go). The observation deck on the 3rd floor costs about ¥340 for adults; the tower is open roughly 9:00–18:00.

    Spot guide: Oarai Marine Tower
  9. Afternoon

    Garupan Gallery

A short walk away, on the 2nd floor of the Oarai Seaside Station shopping complex. Free exhibits on the show and the town, plus Girls und Panzer goods. Open daily, roughly 10:00–19:00.

Spot guide: Garupan Gallery, Oarai Seaside Station
  10. Late afternoon

    Back to Tokyo

Walk back to Oarai Station (about 1.2 km, 15 min), ride to Mito and take a limited express to Tokyo. At the time of writing the Hitachi 18 left Mito around 15:27 and the Hitachi 20 around 16:27 (Tokyo around 17:43); trains run until the evening.

Visiting with respect

  • The rocks under the Kamiiso no Torii are sacred ground where no one may walk. Photograph from the shore, and don't take stones from the beach to the shrine.
  • Oarai Isosaki Shrine is a place of worship. The Girls und Panzer ema can only be seen during gate hours.
  • Character panels stand in front of shops on narrow residential streets. Don't touch the panels, don't step into the road for photos, and don't stop a car on the street to take pictures.
  • Shop owners ask fans not to leave flyers or handouts; just dropping in is welcome.
  • The town asks visitors to check its guidance before coming in cosplay, military-style clothing or military vehicles at events.

FAQ

Can I do Oarai as a day trip from Tokyo?

Yes. The tourism association puts Ueno to Oarai at about 1 hr 30 min by limited express and the Kashima Rinkai Railway. Leave Tokyo by about 8:00 to see the main sights without rushing.

When does the Girls und Panzer wrapped train run?

The Kashima Rinkai Railway posts the wrapped train's times on its news page a few days ahead. It can change for operational reasons.

Can I also visit Aqua World Oarai?

Yes, but allow about 2–3 hours. It is a stop on the tourism association's Girls und Panzer stamp rally and about 21 min by bus from Oarai Station. Open roughly 9:00–17:00 (last entry 16:00), about ¥2,300 for adults.

Are there Girls und Panzer events?

The Oarai Anglerfish Festival is on November 14–15, 2026, and a Girls und Panzer itasha (painted car) exhibition is planned in the shopping streets on November 15. The town fills up on these days, so book trains and hotels early.
