Why the district looks the way it does

Takehara's tourism association says the streets were built by wealthy salt-field owners known as hama-danna, who made their fortunes in salt-making and sold it to merchants of the Kitamae-bune trading ships. The ships were merchant vessels that sailed between Osaka and Hokkaido by way of the Sea of Japan, and Takehara was an important port of call for them. The district's story is part of a Japan Heritage designation, and the association says one of the district's old merchant houses, once the town's leading salt wholesaler, is closed to the public.

Walkers can look for the lattice windows known as Takehara koshi, which come in several types, including a few with playful shapes such as a heart or a throwing star.

Guides and a place to start

The association recommends the Takehara tourist guide service, a walk of roughly 90 to 120 minutes led by a local guide. It must be booked three days ahead, costs about 2,000 yen per guide, and takes up to about 20 people per guide. The page says the guide service plans to close during August because of the heat. Bookings go through the guide association, based inside Michi-no-eki Takehara.

On the Tamayura side, the association says the second floor of Michi-no-eki Takehara has a permanent Tamayura corner with materials and autographs on display. Its Tamayura guide suggests about 3 to 4 hours on foot from JR Takehara Station for the main central spots, and half a day if lunch is included.

Fall lights and the bamboo tunnel

The association's Tamayura guide says the bamboo tunnel at Shoukei Plaza is put up during the autumn event Machinami Takeakari, a bamboo-lantern festival. Check the operator's page before you go.
