Getting to the station by rail

Sakaiminato is reached on the JR Sakai Line from Yonago Station on the San'in Main Line, a ride of about 45 minutes according to the Sakaiminato Tourism Association. Its rail guide lists roughly 3 hours 30 minutes from Osaka and 2 hours 40 minutes from Okayama, using the Hakubi Line to Yonago and then the Sakai Line. From Tokyo it lists roughly 6 hours 10 minutes, changing at Okayama. These are approximate times, so check the JR timetable before you go.

What lines the road ahead

Mizuki Shigeru Road opened in 1993 and runs about 800 m from the station to the Mizuki Shigeru Memorial Museum. According to the museum, 178 bronze yokai statues, or folkloric spirits, stand along both sides of the street, among them Kitaro. The road passes shops and eateries in a retro Showa-era streetscape, and landmarks on or near it include Yokai Shrine and the Kappa no Izumi fountain.

After sunset the road changes. Yokai shadow figures are projected along its length and the bronze statues are lit up. The museum states that the lights are on every evening from sunset until 10 p.m.

Other ways to get around

The tourism association notes that few taxis are available at night in Sakaiminato and suggests booking ahead. A community bus links Sakaiminato with the Shimane Peninsula across the water, including Miho Shrine, with flat fares of about 200 yen for adults and about 100 yen for high school students and younger. A reservation-based shared service called Minatoru, run with AI routing, has operated within the city since April 2025.
