Why Usopp Is in Aso
The statue belongs to the One Piece Kumamoto Reconstruction Project, begun after the April 2016 Kumamoto earthquake. The Aso city page says the quake caused landslides in about 300 places on the slopes of the outer rim and the five central peaks. In some areas the traditional grassland burning could no longer be done, and cracks appeared in Komezuka, a natural monument. In the project's story, Usopp, the crew's sniper, helps the grassland recover with tools that use the power of plants.
The statue was unveiled on December 8, 2019, in front of the station, and about 1,200 people came. The editor-in-chief of Shueisha's magazine showed a hand-drawn Usopp illustration from the creator, who could not attend.
Other Statues and the Anniversary Stamp Rally
The project placed crew statues in nine municipalities over four years starting in fiscal 2019, and a Luffy statue stands at the prefectural office in Kumamoto. For the statue's fifth anniversary, Aso held a stamp rally from December 8, 2024 to March 16, 2025 that has since ended. The stamp card was handed out at the information center inside the station.
