JR Limited Express Hida, approx. 2 hr 30-40 min. Leave luggage at your Takayama hotel or in a station locker.

Takayama → Hida-Furukawa

JR Takayama Line local train, approx. 15 min. Trains are infrequent, so check the return times too. The Nohi Bus from Takayama is an alternative (approx. 35 min).

Hida-Furukawa Station and the footbridge

The footbridge north of the station gives the famous view of the platform. Hida City notes that a train stops at platform 2, as in the film, for just one minute a day, from 9:57. Pick up a walking map at the tourist information office by the station.

Keta Wakamiya Shrine

Approx. 15 min on foot from the station, on the slope above the town. It is an active shrine: bow at the gate, and don't block the steps for photos.

Setogawa canal and the white storehouses

Walk back down to the canal lined with white-walled storehouses. Hida City's course puts it approx. 25 min on foot from the shrine.

Hida City Library

Approx. 5 min from the station. Taki's research scene was modeled on this library. It is a working library used by students and residents: keep quiet, and ask the staff before taking any photos inside; they hand out a photo permit.

Back to Takayama

Train back to Takayama (approx. 15 min) for dinner. Hida beef is the local specialty.

Morning markets

Two markets run every morning: one along the Miyagawa River and one in front of Takayama Jinya. Local vegetables, pickles and crafts.

Takayama Jinya

One of the few surviving Edo-period government offices in Japan. Open 8:45-17:00 from April to October (to 16:30 in winter); approx. ¥500 for adults. Allow approx. 30 min.

Sanmachi old town

Three streets of old merchant houses, sake breweries and shops, a nationally protected townscape. Go before midday to beat the tour groups.

Onward

Limited Express Hida back to Nagoya (approx. 2 hr 30-40 min), or north to Toyama for the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Kanazawa or Tokyo.
