Sapporo & Otaru in 2 Days: Snow Miku, Golden Kamuy's Otaru & the Ainu Collections

SNOW MIKU SKY TOWN

On the 4th floor of the domestic terminal, before you even leave the airport. Crypton Future Media, the Sapporo company that owns Hatsune Miku, runs it: a free museum area and a permanent shop built around Snow Miku, the Hokkaido version of the character. Open 9:00–19:00, every day of the year. Leave your bags in a terminal locker and give it half an hour.

Airport → Sapporo Station

The JR Rapid Airport runs from under the terminal to Sapporo Station; the non-reserved fare is about ¥1,230 and a reserved U-Seat costs more. Neither the airport nor JR Hokkaido publishes a journey time we could read, so allow the best part of an hour with the walk from the gate.

Pokémon Center Sapporo

On the 8th floor of Daimaru, built onto Sapporo Station, open roughly 10:00–20:00 daily. It is the only official Pokémon Center in Hokkaido and it is indoors, which matters in February. animate Sapporo, near Odori subway station beside the Tanukikoji arcade, opens at 11:00 and is the other big anime shop in town.

Hokkaido University Botanic Garden

About 10 min west of the station. Its Museum of Northern Peoples holds Ainu clothing, ritual implements and hunting gear that were actually in use, models of dwellings and traps, and rare archival film of a bear-sending ceremony. It is the best real-world follow-up to Golden Kamuy in central Sapporo, and it makes no claim to be a pilgrimage site. Open 9:00–16:30 with last admission at 16:00, closed Mondays; about ¥420 for high school age and above.

The former Hokkaido Government Office

The red-brick building reopened in July 2025 after a long renovation and now runs 8:45–21:00 with last entry at 20:30, about ¥300 for adults. It is the settlement-era Hokkaido the story is set against, five minutes from the station. Note the all-day closure on November 15, 2026 and the New Year break.

Optional: Sapporo Beer Museum

Fans say the old Sapporo brewery is a Golden Kamuy location, and it is certainly the right period. Neither the museum, the city nor the rights holder publishes that link, so treat it as fan lore. As a visit it stands up anyway: the museum runs 11:00–18:00 with last entry at 17:30, self-guided admission is about ¥1,000 for adults, and the premium tour with a tasting is about ¥2,000 and needs a booking.

Sapporo → Otaru

JR along the coast: about ¥800 non-reserved, and the fastest Rapid Airport does it in about 32 min according to Otaru's tourism association. Sit on the sea side for the run along the shore after Zenibako.

Otaru City General Museum, Canal Hall

About 10 min on foot from the station, in an 1893 warehouse on the canal. Shueisha's own Golden Kamuy site ran a page for this museum's 2016 exhibition on the Otaru inside the manga; that exhibition is long over, but the rooms on the herring fishery and the port are the history it was drawn from. Open 9:30–17:00, about ¥300 for adults, closed only over New Year.

The canal and the old Temiya Line

The canal is 1,140 m long, finished in 1912 and lit by 63 gas lamps; the warehouses are floodlit until about 22:30. The former Temiya Line, Hokkaido's first railway, is now a 1.6 km walking path through the middle of town, about 15 min from the station. Both are free and outdoors.

Sakaimachi Street

The old merchant street south of the canal, about 7 min from Minami-Otaru Station, with a tourist information center open 9:00–18:00 that also stores luggage. Glassware and sushi are what Otaru sells; eat before you head back.

Otaru City General Museum, Main Hall

If you like trains, the museum's railway wing at Temiya sits on the terminus of Hokkaido's first line and holds about fifty vehicles, with a steam locomotive running in summer. About ¥400 in summer and ¥300 in winter, open 9:30–17:00, closed Tuesdays. Chuo Bus route 10 from Otaru Station takes about 9 min, or walk the 1.5 km waterside path from the Canal Hall.

Otaru → New Chitose Airport

The Rapid Airport runs through from Otaru to the airport; the tourism association gives the fastest as about 75 min. Trains stop at three Otaru stations, so you can board at Minami-Otaru if you finish on Sakaimachi.
