The JR Rapid Airport into Sapporo (about ¥1,230), the Botanic Garden (about ¥420), the former Government Office (about ¥300), the train to Otaru (about ¥800) and the Canal Hall (about ¥300). SNOW MIKU SKY TOWN is free. We could not confirm the Otaru-to-airport fare, and the Sapporo Beer Museum adds about ¥1,000.
Best time to go
Early February for Snow Miku and the Sapporo Snow Festival, when the city is also at its busiest and dearest. June to September is the easy season for walking Otaru.
Closing days
The Botanic Garden closes on Mondays and the Otaru museum's railway wing on Tuesdays; the Canal Hall has no weekly closing day. SNOW MIKU SKY TOWN is open every day of the year.
Walking (our estimate)
Moderate: roughly 6–8 km a day, almost all of it flat. The canal path and the old Temiya Line are icy from December to March.
Hokkaido's best-known anime is Golden Kamuy, and our Abashiri route follows it to the prison. This one takes the other end: Otaru, the subject of a 2016 Golden Kamuy exhibition, and the Ainu collections in Sapporo. There is no Golden Kamuy exhibition running in Hokkaido at the moment, so we say so plainly and build the days around what is actually open.

SNOW MIKU SKY TOWN
On the 4th floor of the domestic terminal, before you even leave the airport. Open 9:00–19:00, every day of the year. Crypton Future Media runs it: a free museum area and a shop for Snow Miku, the Hokkaido-supporting version of Hatsune Miku.
The JR Rapid Airport runs from under the terminal to Sapporo Station; the non-reserved fare is about ¥1,230 and a reserved U-Seat costs more.

Pokémon Center Sapporo
On the 8th floor of Daimaru, built onto Sapporo Station, open roughly 10:00–20:00 daily. It is the only official Pokémon Center in Hokkaido and it is indoors, which matters in February. animate Sapporo is 3 min on foot from Odori subway station and is open 11:00–20:00.
Its Museum of Northern Peoples holds Ainu clothing, ritual implements and hunting gear that were actually in use, models of dwellings and traps, and rare archival film of a bear-sending ceremony. It makes no claim to be a pilgrimage site. Open 9:00–16:00 with last admission at 15:30, closed Mondays (the next day if Monday is a holiday); ¥420 for high school age and above.

The former Hokkaido Government Office
The red-brick building is about 8 min on foot from the west exit (south side) of JR Sapporo Station. It is open 8:45–21:00 with last entry at 20:30, about ¥300 for adults. Note the all-day closure on November 15, 2026 and the New Year break (December 29 to January 3).

Optional: Sapporo Beer Museum
Fans say the old Sapporo brewery is a Golden Kamuy location, and it is certainly the right period. Neither the museum, the city nor the rights holder publishes that link, so treat it as fan lore. As a visit it stands up anyway: the museum runs 11:00–18:00 with last entry at 17:30, self-guided admission is about ¥1,000 for adults, and the premium tour with a tasting is about ¥2,000 and needs a booking.

JR along the coast: about ¥800 non-reserved, and the fastest Rapid Airport does it in about 32 min according to Otaru's tourism association. Sit on the sea side for the run along the shore after Zenibako.

Otaru City General Museum, Canal Hall
About 10 min on foot from Otaru Station toward the canal. Open 9:30–17:00, about ¥300 for adults, closed only over New Year. In 2016 it held an exhibition on Otaru as it appears in Golden Kamuy; that exhibition has ended.
The canal is 1,140 m long, finished in 1923 and lit by 63 gas lamps; the warehouses are floodlit from sunset until about 22:30. The former Temiya Line, Hokkaido's first railway, is now a walking path of about 1,600 m.

Otaru City General Museum, Main Hall
About ¥400 in summer and ¥300 in winter, open 9:30–17:00, closed Tuesdays. Chuo Bus route 10 from Otaru Station takes about 9 min, or walk the 1.5 km waterside path from the Canal Hall. The museum stands at the birthplace of Hokkaido's railways, and in summer there is a limited-time ride on the Iron Horse.

The Rapid Airport runs through from Otaru to the airport; the tourism association gives the fastest as about 75 min.

Unlimited travel on JR Hokkaido lines except the Hokkaido Shinkansen. Only worth it if you are adding Abashiri or Hakodate: for Sapporo and Otaru alone, single fares are far cheaper. Open to all non-Japanese passport holders; you must show the passport, and residence cards are not accepted.
About ¥830 (adult) or ¥420 (child); the weekend Donichika Kippu about ¥520 / ¥260
Unlimited subway travel for a day, sold from ticket machines, cash only. On Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays and over New Year the Donichika Kippu does the same job for much less. Neither covers JR or the streetcar.
A flat fare of about ¥230 a ride on the loop through the south of the city, with a 1-day pass at about ¥570 and a 24-hour mobile pass at about ¥840. Useful if you are heading for Mt. Moiwa in the evening.

Visiting with respect
The Ainu collections are about living people and a living culture, not set dressing for a manga. Read the labels, and take the museums' photography rules seriously.
Otaru's canal path and Sakaimachi are narrow and busy. Step out of the flow before you stop to take a photograph.
The old warehouses are working buildings with businesses inside. Don't go through doorways marked private.
In winter the canal path and the Temiya Line are icy. Proper boots, and don't run for the shot.
Snow Miku goods sell out. Don't buy up a shelf to resell: the shop is there for the people who came.

FAQ
Is there a Golden Kamuy exhibition in Hokkaido right now?
No. We checked the publisher's official site, the anime's site, Hokkaido and Sapporo tourism and the City of Otaru, and found nothing running. The Upopoy exhibition ended in August 2021 and the Otaru city museum's in 2016. We will add one here when a new one is announced.
Should I go to Upopoy, the National Ainu Museum?
If you have the time, yes. It is Japan's national centre for Ainu history and culture, at Shiraoi between the airport and Sapporo, and it hosted the official Golden Kamuy exhibition in 2021. Adults are about ¥1,200, or about ¥1,000 booked online and about ¥600 after 14:00; it opens 9:00–18:00 from April to October and closes on Mondays. We could not confirm the train times from Sapporo on an official page, so check them before you commit a day.
Is the Sapporo Beer Museum in Golden Kamuy?
Fans say so and the brewery is the right vintage, but no official party publishes the connection, so we mark it as fan lore rather than a pilgrimage stop.
How does this fit with the Abashiri route?
They are two ends of the same story and they connect by air or rail through Sapporo. Do this route first for the Otaru and Ainu context, then fly or take the train east to Abashiri for the prison museum.
When should I go for Snow Miku?
SNOW MIKU SKY TOWN is open all year.
