Onomichi Waterfront and Mt. Senkoji

Onomichi, Hiroshima, Japan

Area
Onomichi, Hiroshima

The Anime Tourism Association's official list of 88 anime spots, compiled with the rights holders, designates Onomichi as the pilgrimage town for the Fafner in the Azure series. The entry names the town rather than individual buildings, so the setting is the town itself, including the view of the Onomichi Channel from the top of the ropeway at Senkoji. The ropeway up the hill runs roughly 9:00-17:15.

Riding the Senkoji ropeway

The ropeway links the lower station near the city center with Senkoji Park in about 3 minutes. Cars leave each station every 15 minutes, and it runs irregularly if either station reaches capacity. The operator says hours may be extended for events such as cherry blossom season and the Sumiyoshi fireworks festival, and its access page lists a lantern festival on Oct. 17, 2026 with extended service.

One-way fares are about 500 yen for junior high school students and older and about 250 yen for elementary school children and younger. Round trips are about 700 yen and about 350 yen. One child under school age rides free with a guardian. Check the operator's page before you go.

Reaching the lower station

The lower station is about 15 minutes on foot from JR Onomichi Station, or about 5 minutes by eastbound bus to the Nagae-guchi stop, which is right at the station. The operator says there is no parking lot just for the ropeway. The ropeway has no bicycle parking.
