Getting to the statues by public transport
The local project site lays out three ways to reach Oyama Dam from Hita Station. One option is a Hita Bus on the Tsuetate line from the Hita bus terminal to the Nakagawara stop, which takes roughly 30 minutes and costs about 460 yen one way. From that stop the statues are another 20 minutes or so on foot, and the site warns that the last bus of the day has no return service, so check the timetable first.
A taxi from the station taxi stand takes about 20 to 30 minutes and is estimated at about 3,000 to about 4,500 yen. Holiday periods such as Golden Week can bring traffic jams. Check the operator's page before you go for current timetables and fares.
By bicycle and what to see on site
Rental bicycles are available at the Hita tourist information office, about 10 km and roughly 60 to 70 minutes each way, and at the Oku-Hita tourist information office, about 2.5 km and roughly 10 to 15 minutes each way. The site lists regular bicycles from about 700 yen for 3 hours or about 1,000 yen for a day.
The prefectural tourism page describes the statues as life-size figures of the three characters as children, with the 94-meter dam standing in for the wall that protects people in the story. It adds that the Hita project offers a smartphone app with an augmented reality button: pointed at the dam wall, it shows the Colossal Titan, and viewed from behind the statues it recreates the scene from volume one of the comic.
